ICAT’s 6 program activities are grouped under our 2
primary strategies:
- Knowledge Dissemination & Technology Transfer
- Development and Promotion of New Technologies and systems
Knowledge Dissemination & Technology Transfer
Information & Communication:
-
An ICAT newsletter providing information to its membership on recent
developments in the field, conferences and major events, and opportunities
for participation.
- An internet Web site, with additional features for members only.
- Referral services to a unique ICAT information base on transportation and disability:
designed to generate market research information to practitioners,
manufacturers, carriers, etc. on socio-economic data, demographics
and travel patterns. This information can be calibrated to provide
estimates for most countries. Customised analyses can be supplied on
request at cost.
- An ICAT special collection on transportation accessibility: ICAT will
provide relevant information and sources to obtain publications from governments and
other organizations for members as reference.
- An ICAT directory of available technologies to improve transportation
accessibility, and their suppliers.
- ICAT will maintain an active working relationship with other
organizations active in advancing the development of accessible
transportation. These include Transport Canada, the U.S. Department
of Transportation, the Canadian Transportation Agency, the
Transportation Research Board (U.S.), the U.K. Department of
Transport, Institut National de Recherche sur les Transports et leur
sécurité (INRETS, France), the European Conference of Ministers of
Transport (ECMT, Paris), Transport Research Laboratories (TRL,
U.K.), industrial design centres and associations in Canada, the United
States, the United Kingdom and Australia, and the Forum of European
Road Safety Research Institutes (FERSI).
Training and Education:
- ICAT will develop and organize training courses and programs for
the planning, design and provision of accessible transport in all modes.
This is intended to improve the skills, awareness and sensitivity of
students with career aspirations in this field, practitioners and transport
staff in assisting passengers who are disabled or elderly. ICAT will also
provide trainers.
- ICAT will host student interns from universities and colleges with
the aim of imparting them the knowledge on accessible transportation.
Conferences, Seminars and Workshops:
- ICAT will organise and manage regional, national and international
seminars, symposiums, workshops and conferences on accessible
transportation and related topics, individually or jointly with other
partners. These forums are particularly important in bringing together
professionals and interested parties to exchange information and
experience in making transportation more accessible.
Expert Advice and Industry Alliances:
- ICAT has the tools and expertise to conduct site-specific accessibility
audits of transport services, to evaluate planned developments and to
make recommendations on how to improve accessibility and remove
obstacles for elderly and/or disabled travellers in the most
cost-effective manner.
- ICAT can play a supportive role in researching and assessing policy
options under consideration by governments which might encourage or
impact access to or use of accessible transportation services.
- ICAT will conduct research and planning studies in support of its
program activities under its mission goal to promote technologies and
services, either internally or through contracts.
- ICAT will organise a Fellowship Program for work assignments for
experts and scholars at ICAT's office in Montreal and associate offices
elsewhere, including assignments in other countries; to ensure an
effective transfer of knowledge and technology among countries.
- ICAT will organise sector-wide consultations with stakeholders to
co-ordinate a common response to national or international initiatives
on policy and program matters.
Development and Promotion of New Technologies and
Systems
Technological and Systems Development:
- ICAT actively participates with various associations to ensure that
the human factors of disability and ageing are included as design input
in the development of new and advanced technologies, e.g. intelligent
transportation systems (ITS).
Sponsorship and Support:
- In association with Access Exchange International in San Francisco,
ICAT will set up a program to collect and distribute information and
funding to assist in the development of accessible transportation
services in less developed countries.
