- February 3, 2006 From US Transportation Research Board: MEETING THE EMPLOYMENT TRANSPORTATION NEEDS OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES IN NEW JERSEY
The Alan M. Voorhees Transportation Center (VTC) at Rutgers and New Jersey Transit have released a report that identifies and documents transportation barriers to work for people with disabilities and makes recommendations related to addressing the identified barriers. The goal of the report is to enhance transportation services for people with disabilities in a variety of settings throughout the state.

- February 3, 2006 U.K. DISABLED PERSONS TRANSPORT ADVISORY COMMITTEE ANNUAL REPORT 2004-2005
The United Kingdom's Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee has released its annual report. The committee provides independent advice to the Secretary of State for Transport on the transport needs of disabled people. During the past year, the committee made recommendations in support of the Disability Discrimination Act of 2005, which includes a requirement for all rail vehicles to be accessible by 2020. Together with the charity Tripscope the transport travel information charity for disabled people⤲the committee launched the Door-to-Door Website, which advises disabled people on every aspect of planning and making journeys. The committee also created lesson plans for primary school design and technology teachers on how to teach the principles of accessible design as part of the National Curriculum.

- January 27, 2006 From US Transportation Research Board: GSA ADOPTS NEW ACCESSIBILITY STANDARDS UNDER THE BARRIERS ACT
The General Services Administration (GSA) has adopted new accessibility standards for federally funded facilities based on updated guidelines the U.S. Access Board issued in 2004. The adopted standards will apply to a wide range of new or altered buildings under the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA), which ensures access to facilities designed, built, altered, or leased with federal money. The standards will take effect in six months and will replace the existing standards, known as the Uniform Federal Accessibility Standards.

TRB's Conference Proceedings on the Web 2, Safe Mobility for Older Americans: Report of the Committee for the Conference on Transportation in an Aging Society summarizes research accomplishments made during the past decade related to the mobility of older Americans. The report also includes recommendations for policy makers, the research community, government agencies, older persons and their caregivers, the private sector, and other stakeholders to improve older adult safety and mobility and to spur research in needed areas. TRB Conference Proceedings 27: Transportation in an Aging Society: A Decade of Experience (2004) is a companion document to the report.

TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 348: Improving the Safety of Older Road Users examines programs and policies in place across the country to improve the safety and mobility of older road users. The report documents a range of strategies and related programs under way in roadway engineering, driver licensing, public information and education, and enforcement and adjudication.

TRB's Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP) Synthesis 60: Practices in No-Show and Late Cancellation Policies for ADA Paratransit examines current and innovative practices of U.S. transit agencies in the development and implementation of passenger no-show and late cancellation policies for paratransit programs operated under the regulatory requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA). The report reviews the administration, community response, and effectiveness of policies in small, medium, and large transit agencies. The report addresses policies as a way to improve system productivity, efficiency, and capacity, and as a means to better service riders with disabilities who may experience difficulties with the advance reservation aspect of most ADA complementary paratransit operations.

- May 15, 2005 From US Transportation Research Board: ASSESSING RESPONSIBILITY FOR OLDER DRIVERS' CRASHES
An Austroads research report examines patterns in crash responsibility for older drivers by analyzing national fatality data, and insurance and crash records. Y´According to the report, older drivers involved in crashes are about 1.5 times more likely to be judged responsible the crashes than those in other age groups. The report also concluded that older drivers1§ô additional crash responsibility, while valuable in explaining 1§òwhat went wrong1§ô in crashes, makes only a small contribution to the overall road fatality rate.

- ICAT Board Member Organizes Pre-Conference Intensive Session on the Inclusive Design of Accessible Transportation at International Conference on Universal Design, December 8-12 2004
Tom Rickert, Executive Director of Access Exchange International and ICAT Board Member will be organizing an full day, intensive pre-conference sessions at the International Conference on Universal Design: Designing for the 21st Century III (D21), in Rio De Janeiro. The Goal of this workshop is to provide needed tools to promoters, planners, regulators, and implementers of inclusive public transport. Sessions will focus on lessons learned about policy and normative frameworks and implementation issues across a spectrum of modes.

The International Conference, Toward a New Perspective: From Ageing to Ageing Well, the first international conference to address the issue of the new generation of ageing persons was deemed a great success. ICAT was an active collaborator in this event, as member of the Scientific Committee and by chairing the Abstract Review Subcommittee on "Creating a Stimulating Social and Physical Environment". ICAT Secretary General Mrs. Ling Suen also participated at the conference by chairing the panel session on "Creating a Stimulating Social and Physical Environment". ICAT member Harry P. Wolfe co-authored and presented a paper with Mrs. Suen on "Enhancing Access to Airports by Older Adults".

- ICAT authors receive TRANSED 2004 Award for Best Paper, Hamamatsu-Japan
On May 26, 2004, The Scientific Committee for the 10th International Conference on Mobility and Transport for Elderly and Disabled People, TRANSED 2004, granted the award for the best paper to ICAT Secretary General Mrs. S Ling Suen and ICAT Researcher Mr. Daniel Blais. The paper, entitled "Universal Transportation: Strategies for Success", discusses the notion of success for a universally accessible transportation system from the perspective of the main stakeholders, the travellers, the transportation providers and the decision makers. A framework on winning micro and macro strategies is proposed to achieve the goal of transportation accessibility.
